Making Learning Fun While Helping Your Child Be Successful
When I was in high school, my dad suggested that if I wanted to be successful, I should study and interview successful people. It was a PHENOMENAL hobby! Through it, I have learned so much. I have had the honor and pleasure of interviewing some famous people like Mother Theresa, Sir Jon Templeton, Marianne Williamson and Larry Bird as well as some not so famous. Both were equally rewarding. I write about the lessons from these on my blog, “How to Raise a Successful Child by Kindergarten”. When I give speeches to educators across the country, I always start with the same exercise. “Think of someone you know who is successful, and give me the top 3 skills that enable their success.” I then have an audience volunteer write down the answers for all to see. I have done this in groups of 600 or more and never ever, not once, has anyone ever said reading, writing, or arithmetic. These may have once been prerequisites to success, but they are not the skillsets of success. Why are we focused on teaching children mediocrity in this country when we could be teaching them to be successful?
So what are the skillsets of success? They are first and foremost virtues. In fact, every one of the people I have interviewed has at least one super developed virtue. 80% of the answers I get from audiences are virtues. The rest are the ability to communicate and interact with others, not just through the written word but through the spoken word as well; decision making; problem-solving, of which arithmetic is only a small part; and goal setting. Those are the skills we teach at PALS and we do it from a young age in order to instill in your child the skills that will make them successful at whatever they choose to apply them to.
