What to Know About Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligence Theory
As you’re looking for a preschool for your child, one of the things you want to look for is a school that prioritizes every child’s development. At PALS Praise & Leadership, we’ve built our curriculum based upon the best practices in the world. We’ve done that research and incorporated it into our framework to ensure the children we care for are set up for a lifetime of success. One of the top pieces of research we use within our curriculum is Harvard University research professor Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligence Theory.
Understanding This Theory
Gardner’s work in psychology, human cognition, and human potential led to his theory. It outlines that learners have both strengths and weaknesses in the different types of intelligences. Gardner outlined nine types of intelligences and wrote that teachers should learn how to best present material based upon how students learn. His research shows that students will gain confidence where they have opportunity to grow when presented with a range of types of instruction.
Those types of intelligence outlined in Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligence Theory include nine different learning styles, including:
- Verbal-linguistic intelligence, where verbal skills, sounds, and rhythms are well developed
- Logical-mathematical intelligence, where students can think conceptually using numerical patterns
- Spacial-visual intelligence, where the capacity to visualize concepts means students can think abstractly
- Bodily-kinesthetic intelligence, which allows a student to handle objects and control bodily movements with skill
- Musical intelligence, where a student can produce rhythm and pitch
- Interpersonal intelligence, where students can read and respond to those around them
- Intrapersonal intelligence, which involves a student being self-aware able to understand their values and beliefs
- Natural intelligence, where a student connects with the natural world around them
- Existential intelligence, which involves having a deep sensitivity to human existence
PALS has used Gardner’s theories as one of the models with which we have built our innovative curriculum. It’s been tailored to allow children to learn, reach their goals, and find success for a lifetime.
